Ammolite was discovered by the Blackfoot Indians in the Canadian Rocky Mountains who named it Buffalo stone.  A Blackfoot woman discovered the stone when looking for firewood.   It was a harsh winter and there were few buffalo and her people were starving.  She heard singing and was drawn to an unusual rock under a cottonwood tree.  The ammolite stone told her it was powerful medicine  and to take it back to her tribe and it would provide bison for her tribe to eat.  The next morning a huge herd of buffalo was seen right outside of their camp.  The ammolite stone was used in bison hunting ceremonies .  It was wrapped in a medicine bundle of buffalo hide. This buffalo stone was called Iniskim.  Today we call it Ammolite.

More than 70 million years ago a hard shelled squid like marine animal roamed the seas until they suddenly became extinct.  When the inland sea receded, ammonites were found in the Bearpaw shale near Lethbridge, Alberta Canada.  The shells were layered then covered with silt and volcanic ash and crushed and compacted.  With eons of elemental movement , tectonic pressure and intense heat , ammolite was born.

Ammolite  is a fossil of an ammonite.  It is sometimes
reffered to as "Grandmother of Pearl".  It has only been a recognized gemstone since 1981.  It is only found in a small area of Southern Alberta and obviously no more is being formed, which makes this beautiful gem very rare.  It is also  used in Feng Shui  promoting prosperity and healing.

Mac's Gems brings you this rare gemstone in affordable sterling silver and 14 karat gold, as well as some one of a kind pieces in gold filled wire wrapping.  Almost all of our ammolite jewelry are "triplets" and A+ stones .  A spinel or quartz cap is on top of the stone to protect it with the natural matrix on the back. Inclusions and crack lines are perfectly normal, all stones are smooth to the touch. This website is set up so the piece of jewelry you see, is the one you order, is the one you get.  Ammolite varies in color and character so much, ordering by photo is the only possible way our customers will get exactly what they want. Each page contains many photos, so please allow a few minutes for each page to load. We hope you enjoy our site and all its color!
